Striped Taper Candles | Hattan Home

0
0
I received the cutest striped candlesticks from Hattan Home a few weeks ago.  Not only were they packaged so festively, but they are even cuter in person than I anticipated.  I selected the wasabi green + mint because I knew those were colors I'm focusing on adding to our downstairs.  These striped tapers are a fun update on the traditional, pretty much right up my alley.

I had so much fun styling with them!  I added them to the family room, living room, and dining room.  I think they look good everywhere but I'm guessing they'll stay in the dining room for a while.  If Wells ever goes back to school (really another snow day today) I might even try them out in the kitchen.  Because they are gorgeous!

A mantle or buffet feels the most traditional use for candlesticks with taper candles.  I like the fresh feel the stripes give to an other wise traditional area.  And it sneaks in some color without being all in your face, which y'all know I like.

I honestly love them in every space.  They add just the right amount of height to visually balance a vignette without obstructing too much white space.  I'm going to need more.  This is obvious.

What about you?  What's your favorite spot for the taper candles?  Do you decorate with candlesticks some where other than a mantle or in the dining room.  Also, do you actually use them? I'm going to have a really hard time actually taking a match to these pretties!

Black & White Spring Style

Wells finally has school today so it feels a bit like Monday instead of Wednesday.  Anyone else really ready for the weekend?

Even through all this snow, I've got Spring on the brain.  Although I'll be honest, it's hard to think pastel thoughts when skies are so grey.  I'm really loving some cool black & white + navy for Spring.  I'm a big fan of the classic.  Such lady-like pieces.  I may just creep into Spring this year like the sunshine.  What about you?

Traditional Chic Boy Nursery

Y'all.  I stumbled across this nursery in my reader this morning and fell in love.  I've been following along with Whitney's home progress for a few years now through her blog, The Pink Elephant.  She has great taste and I've loved watching her transform her traditional old home with careful ease.  She's honoring the style of her home and making thoughtful long-term design decisions.  All the while, you can tell two young people live there.  It's not just your momma's house.  Anyway, Whitney is due with her first in just 10 days.  Godbless people.  I'm just so excited for her.  She's graciously allowed me to share her nursery here with all of you today.

I call it traditional chic with a nod towards modern jungle.

And just to show you how helpful it is to start with a moodboard to keep you on track no matter your budget or timeframe.  Let's take a look at Whitney's original plan for the room.  She's ended up with  a pretty real translation of the space.  Some pieces are not exact but that's okay.

Gorgeous.  I just know this sweet baby boy is going to love his new room.

Navy + White Obsessions

We have yet another dreary day today here.  Thankfully the projected snow is coming down only as rain.  Sneaking a hint that our warmer forecast for the weekend might really be true.  I am so ready for it y'all.  We all are, I know.

I've got Spring Fashion on the brain.  Maybe if I focus only on warm weather clothes I can will the sunshine into coming.  I love the simplicity of these finds. I picture them with gold sandals on their own or paired up with some color come summer.

I have to give my friend credit for finding this little jewel of a dress.  It looks so comfortable and amazingly flattering.  And check out the back, so pretty.  I think I might need to be a copycat and order this dress too.

Y'all know I have an obsession with necklaces.  Bracelets seem to get in the way and big earrings are still out with little curious fingers pawing my body.  A statement necklace helps a simple outfit feel more polished without much thought.

I'm not sure which I like better, the top or the dress.  Would it be crazy to get them both in the same pattern?  You're right.  Dress it is.  And top.

I have been hearing the most amazing things about tieks.  Have you tried them yet?

I'm in love with this skirt.  Perfect for Church or work or just for stepping it up on a random Tuesday.  But not too fuss.  Long enough to not feel like a teenager.  Big win in my book.

Meal Planning Made Simpe: Week 22

Hey y'all.  It's Monday.  Anyone else feel like this weekend flew by?  I had a busy day yesterday teaching Sunday School and then welcoming my new cousin into our family with a bridal shower at my mom's house.  Rounded it out feeling a bit under the weather.  I'm pretty sure it's from eating too much and drinking too much all weekend.  My body just doesn't adjust like it used to.

Matthew finished his end of our master closet make-over at least two weeks ago and I just finally got around to actually organizing and hanging my clothes back up.  Six+ months of laying everything on top of the chairs in our room was getting old.  Wells loves that all my clothes and jewelry are easy to see and asked if she could choose my clothes yesterday.  She picked a pink dress and matching turquoise necklace so I'd be a perfect match with her.  She melts my heart.  I hope she always wants to stick together.

I'm pretty sure all I'm going to be cooking this week is monster salads served with water.  I need to detox.  But just in case you haven't over done it and are ready for something new and yum, I've got this week's line up ready for you to meal plan.

I'm really excited to have one of my favorite bloggers here today for Let's Chat.  Erin is the author of House of Earnest.  If you're not already following along with her gorgeous DIY's and how-to's I know you will be after this post.  She has such a clean aesthetic that really resonates with me.  She demonstrates that sometimes less is more and a lack of color does not leave a space lacking.  Thank you so much for your daily inspiration Erin and for taking the time to share with us here today!

Let's get down to the nitty gritty!

Self or Space:  Are you more drawn to fashion or interior design?
It's really very equal.  I spent 7 years working in product development and design in the fashion industry, so it' comes a bit more naturally, but my passion for interiors is my focus.

Favorite room in your home
My favorite room in my house is my office.  I feel creative and inspired in there!

Favorite Designer
I really love what Christiane Lemioux does with Dwell Studio.  She has a brand that is on trend, but is still very easy to style and pair with classic pieces in our homes.

Favorite Outfit
My favorite outfit is a much harder question since it changes so regularly.  I'd say anything that is a little bit classy and a little bit edgy.  I love pairing destroyed jeans with a pair of louboutins, pearls, and a leather jacket… or some leopard flats, leather leggings and a tailored trench.

Current Obsession
My biggest obsession has got to be gold.  I know it's everywhere right now, but I want to bring gold into the everyday home with my designs for Grandiflora.  If someone is scared of adding a little gold, starting with a brushed finish automatically softens the hue.

Artist Spotlight: Britt Bass Turner | Greg Irby Fine Art

Greg Irby Fine Art emailed me a few weeks ago about one of their new artists, Britt Bass Turner, and I just haven't stoped thinking about her work.  Her paintings are bright and fresh and fluid.  They would make the most amazing addition to a liven up a more traditional room.

The gallery is located in a little house behind an historic church right in the middle of Buckhead in Atlanta. They were the first gallery to represent Sally Benedict and when she outgrew them they started representing Michelle Armas.

My mission is to find artists who I believe are super talented, committed to their work and their originality, and they also must be kind & good people to work with.  I have been lucky to have met so many who exceed all of our "qualifications." We are about to introduce a new artist, Britt Bass Turner, this Friday. I'm thrilled about it!  I think that you will love her work. She actually studied under Erin McIntosh (one of our top artists) at UGA who has become her greatest mentor - and she is a huge fan of both Sally and Michelle's work.

Britt grew up just north of Atlanta, graduated from UGA in 2011 and just recently married her high school sweetheart.  She has always been in the South and I love her take on it, ""There's a saturation of art and culture based here in the South.  A lot of the artists and designers I love are based here. There's pride in being an artist here, you're part of something!"

To all my Atlanta friends, y'all need to go check out this gallery in person.  Lots and lots of goodness.

You do not want to miss the Teil Duncan pop-up shop at Furbish this morning at 10.  Teil's beach inspired art is amazing.  It's different and modern and I could easily place every piece in my home.

Of course, I picture a Teil Duncan piece in a super badass colorful breakfast nook.  What better way to start your day than with some bright colorful beach scenes.  That, and coffee.  Of course.  I also would love a piece for above my buffet in our more formal dining room.  It would be the perfect piece to make it a bit less stuffy.  Where would you put a TEIL DUNCAN piece?

Friday Random

Hey y'all.  I feel like my brain has been in a million directions this week and I just can't stay focused.  Do you ever get like that?  I can't even believe we've made it to Friday so quickly.  All this sunshine is speeding life right up.  I've been adding a lot more to my plate this week and haven't figured out how to adjust.

We've hosted three play dates and I've had dinner plans out of the house three different nights.  That's a lot of social for me.  I love it, but I'm heading into Friday realizing that some of my normal tasks have been pushed aside.  Mostly in the form of towering laundry piles in the upstairs bathroom and laundry room floor.

I've got a series of paintings that are 90% finished and I just can't find the energy to work on them.  It's not the desire.  Because I want to.  I love loading up my favorite stations on pandora and drinking a glass of wine or two and painting.  But I'm just finding my day is done the minute the kids are tucked into bed.  I want to change that.  And if I'm perfectly honest, I like leaving things slightly undone.  Then I never have to own it in a way the word finished creates.  If someone doesn't like it, I can hide behind the it's not quite finished yet flag.  I want to change that too.

I have some business goals that keep getting putt off until tomorrow.  It's time to give myself a swift kick in the butt and get on it.  It really is that simple, right?

How do you carve out more time for your day?  What are some of your tricks to staying up later?  And by later, I mean 8:00.  Let's be real.  Up until this point I've been living off of coffee in the first half of the day but switch to a strict no-caffeine regimen after noon.  I'm realizing that's not cutting it anymore.  I'd love your insight.  Your tips or tricks.  I'm not really in need of encouragement.  I'm pretty good at giving that to myself.  It's my execution that's lacking.

Egg-Free Easter Egg Decorating + Egg-Allergy Easter Alternatives | Goregeous Kilim Poufs + Bean Bag Alternative

Happy Monday friends.  I have to say I'm starting this week feeling refreshed and ready for the snow today.  I'm going to quit whining and complaining about this endless winter and embrace my colored cords for another few weeks.  My cost per wear is down so low they're practically paying me at this point.  You win snow.

I also found the most amazing egg-free Easter alternative this past weekend at Walmart.  They were in the Easter section mixed in with colorful plastic eggs.  They look and feel just like the real thing.  I love that they come in a carton just like the real deal.  For those of us with egg-allergies in our home, this is the perfect alternative.  The kids can still dye and decorate Easter eggs without the fear of a reaction.  I am so excited about this. I  think it's pretty brilliant for small children regardless of any allergy to egg.  The idea of a clean and germ free project is appealing.  I also love that what they decorate can be saved for years to come.  So sweet.

I am a big fan of the new kilim poufs from Target.  Let's talk about the cuteness at that price point.  I am so tempted to order a set for the family room and another set for the play room.  The navy and cream and turquoise is killing it.  They have yellow and brown but those don't really work in my house.  These others, however, would look right at home in pretty much every single room.  I just love them.  Perfect fugly bean bag alternative.  Amazing in a nursery.  I'm pretty sure we all need at least one.

Barbecue Chicken Pizza

If I'm being completely honest I haven't been cooking much lately.  My meal planning posts are more of a round-up of my top pinterest recipe picks for the week than an actual guide to my family's eating.  I'm trying to change that by getting back to what got me started cooking in the first place.  Basic, simple, yummy meals that I can easily tackle in less than 30 minutes and without much thought.

One of my first meals I made regularly was barbecue chicken pizza made with leftover rotisserie chicken.  Amazingly tasty and super quick to whip up.

Barbecue Chicken Pizza

 Directions:
Heat oven to 450'
Pre-made Pizza crust
Drizzle a tbsp of olive oil and spread over the crust
Spread 3 helping tbsp of Barbecue Sauce over the crust
Sprinkle a layer of shredded Italian blend or mozzarella cheese
Top with cooked shredded Barbecue Chicken
*I use rotisserie chicken tossed with store bought Barbecue Sauce*
Add a layer of either shredded sharp cheddar or the colby/jack mix
Add thinly sliced red onion
Top with fresh cilantro
Turn oven down to 425'
Place pizza directly on the oven rack and bake for 8-11 minutes

I use the exact same recipe without the cheese for Wells and Tagg because they're allergic to dairy.  There is so much flavor in the barbecue sauce that they don't know what they're missing and I'm not big on vegan cheese.  Or they contain rice flour, which Wells can't have.

What are your basic meals?  What is the one go-to you always come back to when you're in a cooking rut?

New House: Dining Room Progress | The Plan

I'm wanting to do just a few things to tweak our dining room.  It's one of the first rooms you see in our house and our pass through to get to the kitchen from the front of the house.  I'm loving how neutral it is right now but I want to kick it up just a notch.

We're sticking with core items in rich wood tones, like the table and cane chairs, secretary, and wood tone buffet.  They're all classic old pieces and I appreciate their stuffiness.  The walls are still classic grey and the windows are white linen panels for now.

The first picture is the view from the kitchen and the bottom is the view from the living room.  As  you can see there is a lot of visual space going on so I don't want to go overboard in any one room.  In reality they are very much defined areas but your eye can see them all at once too.  I need whatever is added to this room to visually work with the rest of the front of our home.  I need to use varying shades of the same color scheme in order to pull this off.

I'm just starting to feel brave and wanting to add in some more color.  I'd also like to bring down the formal feel just a notch.  I know some fresh new accessories can help do the trick.  I think sticking with our love for all things coastal will hit on both aspects perfectly.  The soft shades of aqua and blues will trickle in from the front hall.  Some lighting and accessories that don't take themselves too seriously are the perfect match for our more grown up table and chairs.

Couldn't you just love everything in this board?  I wish I could magically bring this wish list to life.  I like having a road map to keep me on track.  And this round-up confirms that there is indeed a subtle way to add in more layers and color without just randomly adding in more stuff.  And I like that the soft blues and greens are making there way from both the front hall and living room which you can see from all three spaces.

Meal Planning Made Simple: Making Recipe Labels & Freezing Meal Ready Meat

0
0
I promised to share with y'all any tips and tricks I find useful in staying organized overall.  Especially anything that helps our home lives run smoother.  Meal time is always one of those events that sneaks up on me.  Daily.  I've promised myself meal plans full of good food.  I've been given solo trips to the grocery store on the weekend to shop in peace.  Yet my execution still fails most of the time.

I recently attended a frozen meals workshop that really gave me a new strategy for meal prep.  I was given a long list of meats to purchase ahead of time and I felt a bit like I was on a lengthy scavenger hunt.  But in the end I had twenty freezer bags full of meat.  Three hours and two glasses of wine later I had a freezer full of marinating meat prepped and ready for meals.  I'm not certain I would bother with paying for another workshop but I'm glad I attended and learned how simple my dinner prep can become by freezing meal-ready meats ahead of time.

As part of our workshop, we were given the recipes and provided with labels to place on the outside of the bags.  The labels listed the name of the meal and the directions for cooking and turning it into a meal.  So really, just the meat was frozen.  Special note, these are not crock-pot meals but could easily be adapted for that method.

Before this simple labeling step, I would buy extra chicken and ground beef to keep in the freezer but it usually sat untouched for awhile.  I'd be clueless come 4:00 as to what to "turn the chicken into".  Now I do the dirty work ahead of time.  This would be a super fast and effective system to do just once or twice a month.  Something about having is already marinated makes all the difference for me.  I also cleaned and cut the chicken and mushed up the ground beef and turkey.  Everything came out of it's original packaging.

Someone on instagram asked if I bagged my veggies along with my meat and the answer is no.  I do keep a lot of frozen vegetables on hand all the time like broccoli, peas, and green beans so there isn't really a need to mix them ahead of time with the meat.

As for execution, I pull the bag out of the freezer at night and pop into the fridge.  So far they've been defrosted in time to cook at dinner time.  If I don't have all the ingredients to make the specific meal I've pulled because my day runs out of time for a grocery run or at the last minute we're just not in the mood I can just adjust things.  For instance, Italian Chicken breasts that are supposed to be used for Chicken Parm, can easily be grilled up and topped over a salad instead.  So I still have day-of flexibility.

What are some helpful things that you do with frozen meat or frozen meal prep?  I'd love to hear more ideas for making meal time simple.  I think this is something we all struggle with, no matter our season of life.

Coffee Talk | How do you make your coffee

Keurig, Nespresso, Tassimo, Verismo, Mr. Coffee.  I'm confused.

I just want a good cup of coffee in the morning.  Or three.  Okay, but no more that four.  So tell me, what kind of coffee situation do you have at home?  Is it seriously more expensive to have one of these fancy one-cup at a time machines than a regular pot of coffee?  Or is it just so much tastier that you don't even care?

I would love to hear your insight into which machine you have and what you like or don't like about it.  I've looked at four different versions of the keurig alone and I can't figure out the differences between the models.

By the way, it's my fifth wedding anniversary today.  So double cheers to that!  There will be lots of cake for breakfast around here all weekend!

I've also linked up to the Virginia Bloggers today thanks to my girl Alyson.  I'm curious to check out the other blogs.  There aren't very many local blogs that I read and I want to change that.

Our Weekend

Thanks so much for your feedback last week on what machine you use to make your coffee.  I spent some time investigating the new Nespresso Virtuoline and the Keurig over the weekend.  It's safe to say I'm obsessed with the quality of the Nespresso, hands down.  It froths without milk.  Bam.  The Keurig seems a bit more reasonable and less of a splurge so I can't rule that out yet either.  But I drink a lot of coffee.  In fact, I'd say I'm never without it except around happy hour wine time.  So maybe it's worth the splurge right?  I just need to figure out just how many cups of coffee I can order at Starbucks before I start seeing a justified savings.  Will keep you posted on what we decide.

As I mentioned on Friday, Matthew and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary this weekend.  We have crammed a lot into five years.  Four homes, two states, lost jobs, new jobs, one dog, and two kids.  I don't even want to think about the gallons of paint and diapers we've been through.

So to celebrate we pretty much went on an adventure in food eating.  Starting with happy hour cheese plate on the front porch and ending with gourmet donuts on a rainy Sunday morning.  I think I'm going to have to eat salad all week to compensate all the nonsense I consumed.  My parents took the kids for the day on Saturday and we pretty much just went from one place to the next eating and drinking wine and shopping.  It's really fun to have a day date and spend time together in the sunshine.  Sharing several hours in a row together and not just cramming in two or three quickly for date night.  It was perfect.

I got the sweetest surprise in the mail from Shop Poppy Style.  She designed the turquoise spike necklace just for me and I'm in love with it!  I was so curious to she what she came up with after I gave her a very odd description of my style.  Preppy but not too predictable.   A statement piece but still delicate and not too over the top.  Turquoise and gold. This is pretty much perfection.

She's going to be making a few more of these and adding them to the shop soon.   It's such a fun addition.  It's a little bit preppy and a little bit boho, my favorite combination.

Enough about me.  What did y'all do this weekend?  Hopefully something outside on Friday and Saturday.  I don't want to discuss the impending forecast for tomorrow. We're supposed to get more snow here.  I can't even talk about it. That's going to make for a very long week.

New House Kitchen Island Plan

0
I have been pretty on task lately with convincing Matthew to get a bigger kitchen island.  No matter how close-by or casual I get our dining room, the bottom line is that we still need to be able to eat in our kitchen.  We have a toddler sized table and chairs for Wells and Tagg but Matthew and I find ourselves hovering around our current butcher block island eating most of our meals standing up.

I love our current butcher block and the granite top makes it an ideal workspace. I just want a larger surface.  And I'd love to have an open bottom where I can tuck four stools.  I'm not big on the idea of the stools taking up any extra space in the room.  I've yet to find something commercial that fits the bill.  We've talked about building something ourselves and adding a piece of stone to the top.  That way we can ensure the exact dimensions we want.

Have you done something similar?  I know people do this type of transformation all the time.  Did you turn a piece of furniture into an island?  I like the idea of not starting from scratch.

As always I've put together a plan of action.  Traditional elements paired with natural surfaces for texture.  You can see what the current state of the kitchen here or see how it looked right after we closed here.

French Kitchen Island | Nespresso | Round Belly Basket | Branson Glass Vase | Jenny Cutting Board | Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray | Flowers for 2014 Lulie Wallace Calendar | Napolean Backless Barstool | Classic Indoor / Outdoor Lantern | Catamaran Rug| I also love this island and this one too but they're just a bit too small for our space.

UPDATE:
I just found the original picture of our kitchen from the MLS listing which shows the island that was previously there.  It also gives a better true before for you to compare.

New House: Master Bedroom Plans

master bedroom 3/14

master bedroom 3/14 by juliaryan

It's time to start talking more seriously about our master bedroom.   Matthew and I are just officially done with living like college kids.  We are both just completely on board with spending some money to make this room perfect.  Not just good, our bedroom at our old house looked good.  But it's never felt like us.  It felt more like a guest room than a master.  We're going to use a mix of working with what we have and adding in a realistic dose of what we plan to buy.

Staying:
The rug.  It belongs to my mother in law and the only room it will fit in is our master or our living room.  Although you'll see in the mock-up below that we'd really love a sisal.  I'm not sure what we'll end up doing to be honest.  It feels really wasteful to buy a new rug at this point.

The Lamps.  I just purchased two very similar lamps from Homegoods specifically for this room.  Bam.  I'm in love with them.

The wall color. Sherwin Williams Sea Salt cut to 50%.  It's still A LOT of color.  It's gorgeous and I love it but we're still getting used to such a bold choice.

The chairs.  We actually have two wing chairs in our room right now that were graciously given to us by a friend.  I need to have slipcovers made for them but I'm not in a huge rush.

The White bedding.  I still love our Pottery Barn Classic Bedding.

Buying:
An Upholstered Tufted Linen Bed.

Matching bedside tables.  I want either white or weathered grey wood.  Open shelving.  At least one drawer.  At leaset 30' high.  Under $200.  Wish me luck.

Accessories.  A new mirror, picture frames, art, bench for the end of the bed, table for vignette by the windows.

Sisal Rug.  You know I love them.  I put them in every space I can.

master bedroom 3/14 part 2

master bedroom 3/14 part 2 by juliaryan

See, now that you look at the exact same plan with the sisal you like it better.  It's okay, we do too. I just really wish we had somewhere else to put the darker oriental rug so we could justify pulling the trigger on the lighter and more neutral sisal.

What do you think?  Do we work around the existing rug?  It's lovely and looks great in person.  It adds a lot of warmth to the room, both visually and literally.  It was in the living room in the house Matthew grew up in so I think that's special.  But is it special enough to keep out when it's not our style?
