Five for Friday

 1.  This bedroom set up both above and below from Isabella Studio has me major swooning.  All that neutral coziness has me confidant I'm on the right path in our master bedroom.  I think we're going to need to add in a linen color to the bedding mix.

2.  This DIY kitchen hood storage has me pretty impressed.  I'm going to need M to get on that one.  They built is using an inexpensive range hood from Lowes.  I love that you get the look without the price or compromising storage.

3.  The ache.  I read this again last night for about the fourth time in as many weeks and it's so true.  How do you know when mourning no more babies is the same as wanting more?  I'm feeling so mixed on this issue.

4. Having some major discussions going on in our house lately about kitchen islands.  I'm pretty in love with this rustic look today.  I'm sure we'll go with something more classic but I can't help loving this look.

5.  I love everything about this tankini.  Sophisticated and you can still sit down and eat lunch.  Done.

Princess Dress Up Corner

Is everyone having a good Monday?  The sun is shining and it's warm outside today here in Richmond.  It's lifted my mood by about 1000 degrees!  I feel like today really is the first day it feels like Spring.

I've been meaning to share with you a little update we made in Wells' room recently.  There is a small little nook just inside Wells' bedroom door.  During her big dream room makeover we decided to build bookshelves and turn it into a library.  Of course we ran out of time during our three day installation and it was put on the back burner until after the new year.  Once Christmas came, and with it a load of princess clothes, I knew we needed to refocus that area.  Don't worry, we have lots of other space in her room (and our playroom downstairs) to store books and encourage reading.

This nook was just begging to be turned into a princess dress up corner.  It was the perfect place to corral corral everything.  Matthew installed a simple wood bar and I hang up all of her dress up clothes.  I placed a basket on the floor to keep crowns, hats, fancy jewels, and gloves.  The shoe box full of princess shoes was turned on its back to accommodate a few extra pairs.  We also store her Sofia the First Karaoke Boom Box and her keyboard and guitar in the corner.

I love that it encourages free play.  She loves to put on a performance for us at bedtime and she has access at her level to her things during the day.  It also has done wonders to distinguish school or Church clothes from "dress up clothes".  No worries about plastic shoe meltdowns on a Tuesday morning.

Because the clothes bar was hung low enough for easy child access we had a big blank space on the wall right at grown up eye level.  I wanted something bold enough to carry weight but not too busy.  The dress up is the star of the show.  I'm so in love with our purple You Are A Princess print from Uh Oh Pasghettio.  What a fun addition to any girls's room, but especially a princess corner.  We went with the 16x20 and popped it straight into an ikea ribba frame.  Done.

This room has just enough space to really call this a nook but you could easily adapt this system if your child's closet doesn't.  Hooks on the wall behind the door would also work.  The key is to have immediate visual access to everything.  And please don't think this is limited to just princess girl fun. This is our full on imagination corner.  And Tagg has his own system in his room because this type of play shouldn't be limited to girls.

I purposely chose to exclude a mirror from this area because 1. we didn't need it and 2. we didn't need it.  There is a giant mirror above her dresser and lots of mirrors in our home.  I'm not going to lie, I sneak a glance several times a day myself.  But seeing what you look like isn't the point of this corner.  I want to encourage Wells to dress up and chose colors and textures and try on different "personas" and focus on how it makes her feel in her heart and not what it looks like with her eyes.  Girl mom PSA over.

Newport Beach House Tour

I first saw the image of the outdoor space with shelves for stacked wood and a sink on pinterest.  I had planned to use it in a post and so I clicked on the link to get the original source.  When I landed on Eastbluff, a home in Newport Beach, I fell in love with its easy and modern take on rustic.  This laid back home deserves it's own house tour.

Let's Chat: Confetti & Stripes

Hey friends!  I'm excited to have my girl Mallory here today.  She has such a fun style and modern aesthetic.  And the girl is super nice in real life which.  We met for coffee last summer in Nashville and had no problem jumping right into a morning of chit chat!

Hi Everyone!  I’m Mallory from the blog Confetti & Stripes.  I’m a SC native now living in Nashville, TN!  Almost 2 years ago I quit my job to start Mallory Shaw Design, LLC and follow my passion for interiors!  Starting my blog was an extension of that to share all of the fun beautiful things I come across with some fashion, food, et cetera thrown in too!

1. SELF OR SPACE are you more drawn to fashion or interior design?

Definitely space, although self is a VERY close second!  I like creating spaces because that is my strength, however I study and read about both constantly as they inspire each other!

2. FAVORITE ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE

Our living room..although it is one of the rooms I have yet to show a full before and after of.  It was the slowest to come together, yet I love everything in it!  Proof of what I constantly preach: to buy what you love and it will work out!

3. FAVORITE OUTFIT
Lately it has been my camo jeans!  I think it is because they are a little out of my comfort zone, yet I receive more complements on them than anything else!  Maybe I need to start taking more fashion "risks"?!

4. FAVORITE DESIGNER

Kelly Wearstler.  She is the queen of the unexpected.  Her spaces all seem so fashion forward yet timeless, fancy yet livable.

5. BIGGEST OBSESSION

Vintage finds.  Just like anyone, I love a good deal.  Vintage finds are a great way to have high quality without necessarily high price tags!  I like that they add an element to rooms (or outfits) that not anyone can go out and buy!

New House Master Bedroom Plans | Nightstand Options

I have been playing around with different options online for bedside tables ever since my earlier post.  I'm starting to find hope that there are affordable options out there.  I played around with my top choices from Home Decorators Collection.  All of these nightstands are at least 29" tall which was my top priority.  And they are under $300 which was important to me as well.  Matthew asked for whatever we chose to match.  We just both really want this room to feel complete and I think that balance will help with that serene feeling.

Which night stand is your favorite?  Thankfully Matthew and I both want the same one, although I love all three.  I'm curious to here your thoughts too.

Spring Days

Anyone who's read this blog for long enough knows that Wells dropped her nap at two.  Not awesome.  I try to enforce some quiet time after lunch but that lasts anywhere from 20-40 minutes at best.  Yesterday when Wells tip toed down the steps and asked to go play outside I couldn't help but smile.  Days like this have been few and are between lately.  Sunshine is good for the soul.  And of course the mammarazzi in me was super pleased she was still in her cute new top and a tutu.

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  We had the most beautiful spring weather here.  Sunny skies and a cool breeze.  I think we ate every single meal outside.

This recipe couldn't be easier and it's a perfect meal to add to your dinner rotation now that the weather is nicer.  I actually grilled my chicken inside on a grill pan but this would be pretty awesome on a real grill.  It's fresh and filling and perfect al fresca fare.

I actually pre-season my meat with special blends and grape seed oil and then freeze so it's nice and flavorful by the time I'm ready to defrost and cook.

Grilled Chicken sliced super thin
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Swiss Cheese (pepper jack would be even better)
Sweet Baby Ray's Barbecue Sauce

Okay, day two of cold rain.  We are obviously making up for all that sunshine last week I guess.  At least it's given me a chance to search out some new finds for Spring.  I'm still loving a quiet walk into Spring with neutrals.  I'm especially loving navy right now which is new for me.  Blue in general has never been my top color.  I can tell that's really changing.

I've rounded up my top ten Spring Essentials.  No surprise here, they're all basics.  I just don't have the budget to buy things that aren't workhorses.  If it can't do double duty, work day to night, and go well with at least several outfits I tend to leave it behind.  But I like to think my look is anything but boring.  In fact the older I get the more I appreciate a pretty classic wardrobe.

I get Spring Fever with my home decor as well as my attitude.  Right now I want to freshen up my house big time.  I guess that's the trouble with decorating over time, there is always an area that needs a little pick me up!

Any particular room you're working on right now?  We're still plugging away at our master bedroom but I've got my eye out on some extra organization for our family room and playroom and some tweaks in the kitchen.  It never really ends right.

It's been a trying week friends.  Wells isn't feeling well and she's gone completely crazy.  She's 3.5 going on 13, I swear.  It's out of character for her usual sweet self.  She yells, she slams doors, she "quits our family", uses curse words (ooops, my bad.  I most definitely never drop the eff bomb), and overall refuses comfort.  Tagg, in return, gets super clingy which is actually hard to do for a Velcro baby.  I didn't realize we could actually be any closer without  him official climbing back into the womb.  My allergies are acting up and I'm hormonal.  Oh yeah, and we left yesterday for a week at the beach without my husband.  Can you sense the dread in my voice.

The truth is I'm just not looking forward to spending six days alone with them.  I know it will be fine once we get there.  And get on the beach.  And see old friends.  And drink lots of wine.  It's just hard vacationing as a single mom.  It's hard doing much of anything with a two year old and a three year old.

Can any of you relate?  Do you ever get away with just the kids and leave your husband behind at work?  I'm actually used to being a one-woman show most of the time so the missing few hours of co-parenting won't be that big of an adjustment.  And there is nothing a little salt water and sand can't fix.  And we're making memories.  So setting out on these adventures is always worth the extra work.

I don't want to leave this post full of negativity so I thought it would be fun to list 5 random things about myself.  A different twist on five for friday.

1. I always buy myself donuts when I bulk grocery shop.  I usually eat at least 2 or 3 on the ride home.  I buy allergy approved treats for the kids too so I can relish my treat in peace.

2.  I'm obsessed with Perrier slim cans and La Croix sparkling water.  I have at least one every afternoon.  I never drink soda so this is my vice.

3.  I prefer to sit on porches and boats and look at the ocean over actually getting sandy.

4.  I still haven't bought a new coffee maker after our discussing a few weeks ago.  I have my mind made up but I just can't pull the trigger.  I'm this way with so many things.  I'm not indecisive just trigger-shy.

5.  I almost never go anywhere but pertinent errands, school, church, playdates, and playgrounds with my kids.  Always with a 2 hour limit.  Asking anything else of them or myself is just entirely too overwhelming.  I know our limits and I don't push them.  I don't really do anything of the things that a SAHM should do.  I know we're all happy for it.  I think our culture expects too much of mothers.

Okay, so how was that for an off-topic post.  I promise to get back to pretty shoes and lip gloss in no time.

Real Life: Bedtime Stories

I feel like I threw my family under the bus on Friday.  I didn't mean to do that.  I think anyone with kids understands.  The highs of parenting always outweigh the lows.  End of story.  It's not as if a few hours of good behavior can completely dissolve the memory of a meltdown, but it sure does help.  Maybe that's why God takes away our memory after we have children.

I never want to forget the magic of these two snuggled up on our bed watching movies and reading books before bed.  The love you can feel and carry with you for days.  The smell of a clean baby that lingers on your sheets.  The innocent fun of tickles and lots of pillows.  The illogical transformation of a big mess of a child cleaned up fresh and small again.

Okay friends, we're on the way back from the beach today and we couldn't be more thrilled to see Daddy tonight.  All of us.  I'm going to get in major trouble for posting this today.  Matthew is not real big on having his picture taken, much less posing live on the blog.  But these pictures are just too sweet and I can't help myself.  And I'm locked in a car with a two year old and a three year old on 1-95 today so it's impossible for me to take them down until tonight.  Love it.

Hey!  Just popping in for a minute today.  We had a great time at the beach but it's nice to be home.  Although I have to say I'm a bit shocked by the cooler temperatures.  I'm pretty sure we all agreed that Spring was now here, finally.

The kids have a limit for adventure and crave the familiar of home.  I'm thankful for that.  Wells woke up super early but happy.  Excited to be in her own bed.  Tagg had kind of a rough start going back to his crib last night after a week in a queen sized bed with me.  Thankfully he's still snoozing and Wells is still snugging in bed with all of her sweetums.  I'm sneaking down stairs for coffee.

I know everyone is already sharing their favorites from the ShopBop Friends and Family Sale but 25% off sitewide is too good not to mention myself.  Just be sure to use code: INTHEFAMILY14 at checkout.  Especially these jeans and these shoes that I'm wearing above.  I literally live in both of those items.  You can also see more details of my outfit above in this post here

Technical Difficulties | Ads Ons Plug Ins and Such

I'm experiencing some technical difficulties with my computer controls this morning.  I've been sitting here for an hour trying to fix it without much success.  My husband finally just said, why don't you walk away from it for awhile and come hang out with your family.  I think he's right.  There may or may not be an updated post from me later today.  Just cross your fingers I figure out how to stop blocking ad-ons and learn how to enable a javascript I can't find on my computer.  Eh.

Do you have big plans for Easter weekend?  My sister and her family are flying in today from Nashville.  I'm so excited for Wells and Tagg to play with their cousins.  We have two Egg Hunts and a brunch in line for tomorrow and another brunch after Church on Sunday.

As per usual, the kids outfits are all planned and coordinated yet I still have no clue what I'm wearing to anything.  I'm going Southern with a nod to Baby George with Tagg's clothes for a change.  Y'all usually just see his play clothes not his Sun'dy best.  I'm pretty excited to doll him up a bit for probably the last time.

Rewined Mimosa Candle Giveaway

I'm really excited about this giveaway today from Rewined Candles!  They are a small company based out of Charleston, SC who specialize in re-purposing discarded wine bottles into yummy candles.  Wine based scented soy candles, to be exact.  Genius.

The packaging alone would have piqued my interest.  They really pay attention to detail so the candles themselves look gorgeous in your home.  And let's talk about their new scent, mimosa.  Its pure bliss.  It's not too fragrant, in a wow, you lit a strong candle kind of way.  More like an underlying pleasantness added to the room.  I put ours out in the playroom/sunroom the day it arrived and closed the door.  The next day when we opened the door Matthew mentioned something smelled good.  That's pretty perfect in my book.

Because of the fun wine theme, it's the perfect twist on a bottle of wine hostess gift.  And fancy enough to feel special for someone's Birthday or a Mother's Day.

As a special treat, Rewined has graciously extended a discount code valid for free shipping through the end of April.  Just use code: rewinedmimosaJR at checkout!  Just in time for Mothers Day too.

To enter the giveaway for one Rewined Mimosa Candle please complete the following:

1. Leave a comment with your favorite place to light a candle in your home.  Mine is the kitchen, by the way.

2. UPDATED: Instagram a picture of your rewined candle and tag (@juliaryancreates) and (@rewined) along with the hashtag #rewinedmimosa.  Come back here and let me know you've done that.  OR instagram a picture of your favorite spot to unwind.

We had such an amazing Easter Weekend!  My sister and her family came down from Nashville and my brother was able to make it down from DC.  We never ever have us all together.  Add in some particularly nice weather and it made for such a special weekend.  We are usually terrible about taking nice pictures but I was adamant that we make the effort this time.  My brother is moving to Italy this summer so it might be a while before we're all together again.

I'm so glad we made some time to take some pictures of my sister and her beautiful family.  Her oldest is 5 and her youngest is one now so their personalities really come out strong!  It's so fun to be able to do this for her.

My sister's dress is Kayce Hughes by the way and I love how it's so girly yet ties in with her boys in blue.

Of course I couldn't resist snapping of all four cousins together.  With half of the bunch living in Nashville, we don't all get together often enough.  I know my parents are going to treasure these  pictures forever.

Y'all know I've found some fun things at Uncommon Goods for the kids like our Cardboard Elephant Head in the Playroom or the adorable elephant hook in Tagg's room.  But did you know they also have some fun things for Mom's as well.

Now that we've got Easter under our belts, its time to start thinking about Mother's Day.  I've rounded up some of my favorite gifts for Mom.  I'm not going to exhaust you by telling how quickly Mother's Day is approaching.  Y'all.  Easter shouldn't be allowed to come this late.  You don't want to be left with nothing but a card and some backyard flowers to honor the women with the most challenging and exhausting job on Earth.  Let's all agree to step it up a bit this year.  I think it's really fun to go with something fun she wouldn't just buy herself.  What about you?

Be sure to check out the awesome finds for yourself as well, ladies.  In my house I have to be in charge of gifts even on Mothers Day.  I'm pretty sure I need this caterpillar bud vase for all of the sweet little dainty buds my kids bring me!

This post was sponsored by Uncommon Goods but as always, all statements and opinions are all my own and I only recommend products that I actually like.
